Fabrication of Siemens Blade Racks, Tower Grillages and mobilisation works
The Sandbank offshore wind farm is the second large offshore wind farm project undertaken by Vattenfall in collaboration with Stadtwerke München.
The Sandbank project area is located 90 kilometres off the coast of Sylt in the German North Sea and is therefore not visible either from land or from the islands just off the coast.
The wind farm extends over a total area of 60 square kilometres. Buoys around the wind farm mark a 500 metre safety zone, which is out of bounds to non-authorised shipping. The distance to the base port in Esbjerg in Denmark is about 100 km. Depending on waves and swell, a service ship can cover this distance in about three and a half hours, a large installation vessel in about six hours.
When it is completed, the Sandbank wind farm will have 72 Siemens wind turbines in the 4-megawatt class and an offshore substation. The foundations – monopiles – has been installed at depths of between 24 and 34 metres. When it is completed in 2017, the wind farm will be able to supply more than 400,000 households with green electricity. The first monopile was installed in June 2015.
MCC were awarded the contract to build the Tower Grillages and Blade Rack Support Structures along with the foundations for the Nacelle Grillage.
We were also awarded the contract to build the Blade Racks for the Siemens Turbines, which will eventually carry 18 No turbine blades to the installation site per cycle.
The Mobilisation was accelerated and the vessel was delivered to the Client 2 weeks ahead of schedule.
